la Otra*

La Otra* is an artistic research and film collective that traces figures, gestures, & affects whose influences are muted, silenced, and excluded from "official histories". As a starting point, we look towards peripheries, repressions, negative spaces, and the subconscious as sites of study— taking an interest in the fragmented & ephemeral phenomenons that emerge from within these spaces.

La Otra* is composed of three artists, Laura Alcalde, Sol de Caso, & Laura Cadena, originally from Spain, Chile, & Colombia respectively. Currently based in Barcelona, La Otra*’s practice combines our interdisciplinary backgrounds in video-art, performance, and anthropology. Through this work, we pursue artistic inquiries marked by counter-ethnographic traces— challenging extractive observation by foregrounding reciprocity, intuition, and lived entanglement. In doing so, we are attuned to the moments in which shared reflection takes on a collective life, distributing itself among us in unexpected & surprising ways.

An investigative research project situated in the village of Taznakht within the Drâa-Tafilalet region of southern Morocco. Economies, architectures, social lives, and geological temporalities are understood as interrelated dimensions that form a material and relational framework. The film’s points of observation remain steadily guided by the women of Taznakht, whose gestures, labors, and spaces of daily inhabitation modularly shift in accordance with the region’s economic, cultural, and ecological transformations. The legibility of this modularity takes on an articulate quotidian form within the utilization of movable furniture like tables, stools, and carpets— the latter of which are woven & sold by Taznakht’s women to provide essential financial contributions to the changing economies of their households. Modular technologies, adhoc repairs/material solutions, and ephemeral structures/shadows are documented repeatedly to study and celebrate the الحداگة (hadaga), ingenuity, through which Taznakht’s women bring beauty, pleasure, resilience and continuity to their lives.

As the second installment of La Otra*s ongoing series, footnotes, this piece continues the collective’s inquiry into margins and peripheries as channels for subconscious thought, unrecognized economies, and emergent relationalities. Re-inscribing the film collaboratively with footnotes, La Otra* playfully re-appropriates the anthropological tradition of diagramming, drawing, or writing upon ethnographic video documents— a tradition of marking which limits the interpretation of gathered materials by forcing a single legibility onto the presented scene. footnotes2instead expands the image's capacity for interpretation, offering no authoritative "reading" and at times functioning graphically, and symbolically as floating signifiers.

The piece can be presented as a standalone video or (1) alongside a booklet containing additional footnotes that pair with the film's images, or (2) a carpet woven by the women of Taznakht that invites viewers to sit on it while contemplating the work, extending the project's exploration of footnoting through material form
